It’s hard to believe, but the Call of Duty franchise has been around for a decade. Players have been loving each new installment in the series, but Activision wanted to add a little excitement to make sure they don’t lose interest. Their solution? Add a dog!
The dog, who is named Riley, will be a playable member of your squadron. He’s a German Shepard clad in army gear. He looks adorable, but he’s not just there to be cute. He’s designed to be a valuable member of your team.
One of the many things Riley can do is sniff out explosives. He can also help players fight enemies by biting and tackling them. He can provide a distraction that will help a player escape. He can even help take down helicopters by leaping into the air and attacking the pilot.
Riley will also be equipped with a wide range of gadgets, all of which are based on tools used by real military dogs. Players will be able to outfit him with new gadgets as they progress through the game. These tools can help make him an even more useful member of your squadron.
Another fun feature the Call of Duty: Ghosts dog will offer players is the ability to see things from his point of view. There’s a camera attached to his tactical suit, and players can use it to see what things look like from his perspective. Players could use this to scout out locations, or to get a dog’s eye view.
Activision was able to make Riley feel ultra realistic by using motion capture on a real dog. A total of two dogs were used: one named Rico, and one named Ruger. Ruger performed most of the movements you’ll see in the game, and Rico took care of the attacks. They worked alongside trainer Chris Connell.
The Call of Duty: Ghosts team also spoke with Navy SEALs in order to research the role of military service dogs. Developers learned how dogs and soldiers worked together, and even spent time with a former service dog. Players will be getting a real look at the role service dogs play.
Riley developed a huge following almost immediately after he was revealed. He now has his own Twitter account, @CollarDuty, which has currently has nearly 30,000 followers. He also has numberous fan sites and a Facebook page.
But although his announcement was met with a lot of excitement, it was also met with a lot of concern. Many players worried that Riley would die at an important moment in the game. They didn’t want to grow attached to a dog only to watch it perish. Thankfully, the game’s executive producer, Mark Rubin, has assured players that Riley will remain safe and sound.
Whether you’re a dog person or a cat person, it seems clear that Riley will add a lot to Call of Duty: Ghosts gameplay. He’ll be a lovable teammate as well as a big asset. Players can officially meet Riley when the game is released on November 5th, 2013. Get Call of Duty Ghosts PC Download here!
