I’ve never been able to buy a console when it first launches. Sure, the Xbox One and PS4 look great, but they’re expensive and have a tiny library of games. I’ll pick one up after a few price cuts and a few big releases. For now, I’ll stick to my Xbox 360.
I was a little disappointed that I wouldn’t be playing the first next gen Call of Duty game on a next gen console, but all that changed when I saw the game in action. The game has a brand new graphic and audio engine, and it shows. When I compare it to Call of Duty 2 or even Black Ops 2, the leap forward feels huge.
There were all kinds of little graphical details that made my experience feel more immersive. The lighting was excellent, and I liked the level of detail given to minor things like blades of grass. I have no way of measuring the frame rate I got, but it seemed really solid to me.
The sound design was also excellent. I play Call of Duty with headphones, and I really felt like I was completely caught up in the game’s world. Call of Duty: Ghosts doesn’t have the most impressive story, but thanks to its new engine, it’s still extremely immersive. I jumped a few times when I was playing multiplayer.
One of the big features of Call of Duty: Ghosts is the dog. You have the opportunity to view things from the dog’s point of view, and this lets you notice all kinds of things you’d never pay much attention to normally. I wish there was a way to take Riley back into older games to see if they all have this level of detail! I really appreciated having the new view.
There are some really gorgeous locations in Ghosts that show off the improved graphics to their fullest. You spend time underwater, in beautiful ruins, and in sets that look like something out of a horror movie. The imaginative set pieces make playing the game much more fun. Call of Duty isn’t known for being colorful, but there’s some great variety here.
The gameplay didn’t offer a lot of innovation, but the improvements it did make were nice. You have a lot of options for character customization, and the new gameplay modes were all pretty great. Extinction is where you’ll be able to enjoy the game’s graphics the most. It has you fighting alien monsters in a delightfully campy universe. It’s a co-op mode that makes you feel like you’re playing an entirely different game.
If you’re considering picking up Call of Duty: Ghosts for the Xbox 360 or PS3, you shouldn’t hesitate. You’ll be able to get a taste of the next gen experience without shelling out for a whole new console, or maybe you can check Call of Duty Ghosts Download for PC. Call of Duty: Ghosts really looks like a next gen game, and it makes me happy to be a 360 owner.
