It’s officially happened. The Xbox One and PS4 have been released. Next-gen is now current gen. So how does the new Call of Duty stack up? Here’s what I thought of Ghosts on the Xbox One. I haven’t played the game on the PS4, so keep in mind that some things
Ghosts has some new features, and it definitely looks a little crisper, but as a whole, it’s the same old Call of Duty. The dog is a neat addition, but it’s not gamechanging in the way the Pick 10 system or killstreaks were. It feels more like a new Call of Duty game than a step into the future.
That said, there are some very cool new multiplayer modes. Grind feels a lot like Headhunter in Halo, and it’s an absolute blast to play. It’s exhilarating trying to drop off dog tags before someone guns you down. Search and Rescue lets you hop back into the game even after you’ve been taken out, and Blitz is fast, frentic fun.
Another interesting multiplayer mode is Squad. This lets you create a team of 10 soldiers. Instead of the fast-paced shooting action commonly associated with Call of Duty, this offers a quieter experience that involves spending a lot of time in menus. I like it because it really feels like something new.
Lastly, the ultra-fun Extinction definitely deserves a mention. Yes, there have been similar modes in past games, but fighting against aliens is even cooler than killing zombies. It’s so much fun no matter how many times you play it. I almost felt like I was playing something other than a Call of Duty game.
There are other new multiplayer elements, but they’re not all they’re cracked up to be. The destroyable environments seem amazing at first, but the novelty wears off quickly. It’s cool to see a wall get destroyed, but I’ve never seen the environmental changes have much of an impact on multiplayer. That said, there are still some nice improvements. Getting sniped from the sky was a huge pain in previous games, and there’s definitely less of that here.
The single player campaign feels like a big step back from Black Ops II. The story may not have been executed perfectly, but the branching paths were really cool. The story in Ghosts felt really by the numbers, and there were no cool surprises. There are some cool moments, but I don’t think I’ll ever play it again. I played through Black Ops II’s single player multiple times.
Call of Duty: Ghosts is fun, but it doesn’t really offer a next-gen experience. It just feels like more of the same. I hope that future Call of Duty games really try something new. I’d love to see them take full advantage of this gen’s improved specs, or do something amazing with the improved Kinect. Sadly, we’ll have to wait longer to see what a truly next-gen Call of Duty will feel like. Until then, check the current Call of Duty Ghosts PC Download here!
