In this review we’ll take a look at the innovative Call of Duty Black Ops II. One of the most popular installments in the COD franchise.
- What If Call of Duty Was Even More Exciting?
This seems to be the question that drives the games develop in the their: Call of Duty Black Ops 2. While the game does conform to some of earlier established cannon, it brings a whole new level of game play options, unexpected turns, and surprises that make COD Black OPS II one of the most innovated Call of Duty games ever release. While it feels sometimes like the development team let this project run wild, there have been some great improvements to the load out system, and player determined story-line, that serve to bring this version of COD into brand new territory.
The games narrative moves smoothly between various characters perspectives, throughout the cannons time line. My favorite missions are the cold War-era ones, that follow the adventures of Alex Mason and Sgt. Woods form the first Black Ops game.
The game also jumps forward in time to 2025 and focuses on Alex’s son David. All of their fates are being closely manipulated by Raul Menendez and his Cordis Die secret society. Menendez is the classic unkillable nemisis, who holds grudges for decades. However, his motives are subtle and serve to pull you into the story. His past is a tumultuous one and he’s out to right perceived wrongs done against him by the meddling of other nations.
More than likely you find yourself more than sympathetic to Menendez. There were times that I actually found myself rooting for him. while his goals were despicable, you can’t help but understand why he set on his path of destruction. Black Ops II doesn’t give any easy outs, you’ll find yourself having to make some very challenging moral decisions. The writing in this game is very well-done, if you don’t find yourself musing over your choices when you’re done, I’d be very surprised.
As said before, the writing in this game is top-notch, but it really pulls out all the stops when it comes to the subject of consequences and player choices. Choosing to ignore or overlook seemingly irrelevant choices — like looking for all possible intel or deciding to take out a foe — will come back to help, hurt, or haunt you later. For example, failing objectives might result in a series of new missions unlocking rather than a restart screen. This is some very innovative level and campaign design, the cut-scenes are also extremely well done and serve to flesh out the story. In fact, it’s well worth it to replay some scenarios just to see the alternate ending paths. Having so much control of how the story flows, creates a very immersive experience. You might be taken by surprised and even a little shocked, by how much your actions influence events. However, it’s well worth playing and enjoying.
